LETTERS FROM LOVE — With Special Guest Lennnie the Blob!
A little blob to help you get through the day
Hello friends!
Thank you for joining us again today on LETTERS FROM LOVE!
We are 90,000 people strong as of this week — which I find absolutely astonishing, given the fact that the first time I ever wrote myself a letter from Unconditional Love, I was in the darkest and loneliest chapter of my life. I was going through my first divorce, as well as being in deep and painful withdrawal from a doomed love affair that had burned out almost as fast as it had blazed up. I was losing my house, all my money, and my mind. My body was a wreck, overcome with so many psychosomatic symptoms of mysterious pain and inflammation, and I felt that I was a disappointment to everyone in the world — especially myself.
It was in that quite literal dark night of the soul that I first heard a suggestion, coming to me from some unknown source, suggesting that I open up a notebook and write myself a letter from love. The exact suggestion, in fact, was: “Write to yourself the words you have always wished someone would say to you.”
And so I did. And the words came:
I am right here. I love you, and I’m not going anywhere. You are not alone. I will never leave you. It’s all going to be alright. You’ve done nothing wrong. There is nothing you could ever do to lose my love. I will always be right here with you. I have nowhere better to be, and nobody I would rather be with . . .
Who was writing these words to me, in the dark, on the bathroom floor?
Love. That’s all. No big deal. Just Unconditional Love.
I cannot express to you how moving and mysterious I find it now, when I get on Substack and read the letters that Unconditional Love is writing to all of YOU — and I hear the same reassuring words, offered to us all. Love is with us. Love isn’t going anywhere. Love will never leave us. It’s all going to be alright . . .
So it’s not just me who is loved beyond measure by a force that cannot be seen, touched, or felt; it is all of us. This seems like excellent news, given how tricky and terrifying a human life can feel at times.
Today we will be asking Love to help us understand who we are, and I can’t wait to hear everyone’s responses!
And also this week, a big treat — our special guest is a little blob with a huge heart who you may already know from their (deserved and giant) social media following: LENNNIE! Here is who Lennnie is, and who Lennnie is is just about perfect:
Below, we are the lucky audience for an original animation starring this particular and special blob, who wants you to know that you are not alone. (Lennnie’s official bio, in fact, reads a little blob just trying to help u get through the day 🌱!)
This just keeps getting better and better.
I love you all with the force of a thousand burning suns!
Onward,
LG
Dear Love, what would you have me know today about who I am?
Sweetheart, it is not so much about who you are; it is about what you are. But since you asked, let’s start with who.
It’s a bit of a complicated story, because who you are is many whos. You are a mammal, a human, a female, middle-aged, divorced, American, English-speaking. You are a family member, a friend, a neighbor, a community member. You are a writer. You are bisexual. You are an addict in recovery. You can be a kind person, a selfish person, a loving person, a solitary person, an active person, a lazy person, a happy person, a sad person. You are mortal, you are frightened, you are brave, you are overwhelmed, you are resilient, you are dependent. You are sometimes codependent! You are a Cancerian, you are an Enneagram Wing 2/3 (the helper/achiever), a Human Design 6/2 (role model/hermit), and you are Type A- in your blood and Type A in your personality, and you are a registered Democrat.
Lots of costumes, lots of roles.
Who you are is all those things, and you are many, many more whos beyond. We could make lists all day, but it still really wouldn’t get to the heart of the question you have asked.
So let’s talk about WHAT you are, which is far simpler.
WHAT you are is God in drag, to quote your old friend Ram Dass, who you never met.
He got it, and sometimes you get it, too.
Because what else could you be, sweet one? You are nothing more and nothing less than that which you are made out of, and that which you are made out of is God. Show me one thing on this earth or beyond that isn’t made out of God, please.
I’m still waiting.
Right?
So you, my precious spark of light, are God having fun taking on different shapes and forms, just for the sake of infinite, limitless creativity and adventure.
Your soul has come here many times before to experience this wild play. And each time you have come, you have learned to enjoy it a little bit more and fear it a little bit less. And you have learned to connect a little bit more, and to isolate a little bit less.
As for me, I am Love. I am here to remind you of what you are. And I am also God in drag, as it turns out — just to make things more fun.
So I suppose that means that I am you, and you are me, and we are both THAT — and between us, between anything, there is no separation. Which seems like good news, because we both seem to really enjoy hanging out together.
So let’s keep going, my dearest one. (Even though there’s nowhere to go, since we are exactly the same thing at the same time as everything and everyone else.) Still, it’s quite a ride and I say we may as well enjoy it together.
Stay very close to my voice, little one. I’ve got you, I will guide you, I am you, and I love you.
Have a beautiful day — whatever that even is!
Let’s keep going, because it appears to be the greatest show on earth.
Love,
Love
Prompt
Dear Ones, the simplest way to access Unconditional Love (that I’ve ever discovered) is to simply open a notebook and ask this question: “Dear Love, what would you have me know today?” Then allow the answer to flow through you. What, indeed, WOULD Unconditional Love want you to know, if it could tell you anything? But if you would like to go deeper, please feel free to ask this question this week: “Dear Love, what would you have me know today about who I am?”
Well, Instagram live and “event” but close enough . . .
I hope you will join me and the incredible Dr. Mariel Buqué this Wednesday evening, March 27th, at 7pm ET over on Instagram (where I am @elizabeth_gilbert_writer).
We will be talking about Dr. Buqué’s revolutionary new book, BREAK THE CYCLE. It’s all about the powerful mind-body connection and understanding intergenerational trauma, so we can heal intergenerational trauma. We all know that that word — trauma — gets used a lot, so I will start by asking her to define different manifestations of “big t” and “little t” trauma, which you may find surprising, enlightening, and helpful — all the good things! Hope to see you Wednesday!
